5 Tips to Help Decorate a Small Space
Granted, successfully decorating a small space is much harder than decorating a large space, but that doesn’t mean that it can’t be done. Here are five guidelines and tips to follow when you are faced with furnishing a smaller room.
1. You will need discipline. You need the discipline necessary to understand that not everything you own will fit into this room. It may be that your bed is too big or that great sectional just won’t fit. You need to understand that you will have to get rid of, loan or store those items that won’t work in this space.
2. You’re going to have to be creative. You will need your imagination to come up with the best decorating solutions. Try checking out some interior design books for inspiration and tips or even contact an interior design student for some quick advice.
3. Make sure you use your vertical space. Take advantage of the area near your ceiling to store items you don’t need everyday by putting up attractive shelves close to the ceiling. If the items you want to place up there aren’t attractive, put them in cute boxes or containers.
4. Don’t just cram all of your furniture up against the wall. Placing your furniture a few inches away from a wall and then putting something reflective, such as a mirror, behind the furniture will give the illusion of depth and space, making the room look deeper and bigger. This really works.
5. If you have some great hardcover books, don’t hide them, use them as supports to make some old-fashioned bookcases. Heavy books are solid and can be used as the pillars to support solid wood shelves where you can place other smaller books, knicknacks and display items.
You can do it. You can make your small room functional, fashionable, comfortable and inviting. Use your discipline and creativity, along with a few interior design tips and good luck.
